]]>Deciding if a French Bulldog or any other pet is the perfect addition to your family involves considering various factors. While French Bulldogs are known for their affectionate nature and adaptability to apartment living, there are several aspects to consider:
Temperament: French Bulldogs are generally friendly, affectionate, and good with families. However, individual temperament can vary, so it's important to spend time with the specific dog you're considering.
Size and Space: French Bulldogs are a small breed, which can make them suitable for apartment living. However, they still need sufficient space to move around and play.
Activity Level: French Bulldogs have a moderate activity level. Regular short walks and playtime are usually enough to keep them happy, but they may not be as high-energy as some other breeds.
Health Considerations: French Bulldogs are prone to certain health issues, such as respiratory problems due to their flat faces. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy diet are essential.
Time Commitment: Pets, including French Bulldogs, require time and attention. Consider if your family has the time to dedicate to training, play, and regular care.
Allergies: Check if anyone in the family has allergies to pet dander before bringing a dog into the home.
Financial Considerations: Owning a pet comes with costs for food, veterinary care, grooming, and other supplies.
Before making a decision, it's crucial to research the specific needs of French Bulldogs, ensure you can meet those needs, and consider adoption from a reputable source. Additionally, consult with all family members to ensure everyone is on board with the responsibilities of pet ownership.

]]>Providing a balanced diet is vital for the overall health and well-being of your beloved French Bulldog. With so many food options available, it can be overwhelming to determine the best diet for your Frenchie. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the importance of a balanced diet and provide expert tips to help you choose the best food for your furry friend.
Understanding Nutritional Needs: French Bulldogs have unique nutritional requirements. They require a balanced blend of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to thrive. Prioritize high-quality, species-appropriate ingredients in their diet.
Consult with Your Veterinarian: Consulting with your veterinarian is crucial when determining the right food for your French Bulldog. They can assess your Frenchie's specific needs, consider any health concerns, and recommend suitable dietary options.
Quality Over Quantity: Focus on quality rather than quantity when selecting dog food. Look for premium brands that use real, wholesome ingredients, without artificial additives, by-products, or fillers. Opt for foods with a high meat content and minimal to zero grains.
Age and Life Stage Considerations: Different life stages require varying nutritional profiles. Puppies, adult dogs, and seniors have specific dietary needs. Choose food formulated for your Frenchie's age and life stage to ensure proper growth, development, and maintenance.
Protein-Rich Diet: French Bulldogs thrive on a protein-rich diet. Look for animal protein sources listed as the primary ingredients. Avoid foods that rely heavily on plant-based proteins.
Essential Fatty Acids: Include sources of essential fatty acids in your Frenchie's diet, such as fish oil or flaxseed oil. These promote a healthy coat, skin, and overall immune system.
Avoid Allergenic Ingredients: French Bulldogs are prone to food allergies and sensitivities. Common allergens include wheat, soy, corn, eggs, and certain meats. Monitor your Frenchie's response to different foods and avoid those that cause adverse reactions.
Portion Control: Maintain a healthy weight for your French Bulldog by practicing portion control. Follow the feeding guidelines provided by the food manufacturer and adjust as necessary based on your Frenchie's activity level and body condition.
Regular Feeding Schedule: Establish a consistent feeding schedule for your Frenchie. Regular meal times help with digestion and prevent overeating. Avoid free-feeding to maintain portion control and prevent obesity.
Monitor and Adjust: Observe your Frenchie's overall health, energy levels, coat condition, and stool quality. If any issues arise, consult your veterinarian for dietary adjustments or potential health concerns.
Feeding your French Bulldog a balanced diet is essential for their optimal health and longevity. By understanding their nutritional needs, consulting with your vet, and selecting high-quality, appropriate food, you can ensure your Frenchie thrives. Remember to monitor their health, make necessary adjustments, and provide them with the best possible diet for a happy and healthy life.
]]>Taking care of your French Bulldog's dental health is essential for their overall well-being. While it may seem like a challenging task, regular tooth brushing can prevent dental problems and keep your Frenchie's smile healthy and bright. In this guide, we'll provide you with expert tips and techniques to make the tooth brushing process a breeze for both you and your furry friend.
Start Early: Introduce tooth brushing to your French Bulldog from a young age. This helps them get accustomed to the process and makes it easier as they grow older. Begin by gently touching their muzzle and gradually progress to lifting their lips and touching their teeth and gums.
Use the Right Tools: Invest in a high-quality, soft-bristled toothbrush specifically designed for dogs. We like THIS ONE. Avoid using human toothpaste as it can be harmful to dogs. Instead, opt for toothpaste formulated for dogs, we like THIS ONE.
Get Familiar with the Teeth: Take a closer look at your Frenchie's teeth to identify any signs of dental issues. Look for redness, swelling, tartar buildup, or loose teeth. If you notice any concerning issues, consult your veterinarian for further evaluation.
Gradual Introduction: Before starting the actual brushing, introduce the toothpaste to your Frenchie. Let them taste and sniff it to create a positive association. This will make them more receptive when you begin brushing their teeth.
Gentle Approach: When brushing, use gentle, circular motions to clean their teeth and gums. Focus on the outer surfaces as these are most prone to plaque buildup. Take it slow and be patient, providing plenty of praise and positive reinforcement.
Make it a Positive Experience: Turn tooth brushing into a positive and enjoyable experience for your French Bulldog. Create a calming environment, use a soothing tone of voice, and offer words of encouragement. The goal is to make tooth brushing a stress-free activity.
Consistency is Key: Establish a regular tooth brushing routine for your Frenchie. Aim for daily brushing sessions as plaque can harden within 24 hours, making it more challenging to remove with a toothbrush. By brushing every day, you can effectively prevent plaque buildup and maintain good oral hygiene.
Health Benefits of Daily Tooth Brushing:
a. Prevention of Dental Diseases: Regular tooth brushing helps prevent common dental problems such as plaque, tartar, gum disease, and bad breath. These issues can lead to discomfort, pain, and even tooth loss if left untreated.
b. Overall Health Maintenance: Maintaining good oral hygiene has a positive impact on your Frenchie's overall health. Poor dental health can contribute to systemic problems like heart disease and kidney disease. By brushing their teeth daily, you're promoting their overall well-being.
c. Reduced Veterinary Expenses: By prioritizing dental care and preventing dental diseases through daily tooth brushing, you can potentially reduce the need for costly dental procedures or treatments in the future. Regular brushing saves you from expensive vet bills down the line.
d. Anesthesia Risks: It's important to note that dental work and professional dental cleanings from a vet often require anesthesia. French Bulldogs, like other brachycephalic breeds, are more susceptible to anesthesia-related risks. By practicing regular tooth brushing, you can minimize the need for extensive dental procedures that require anesthesia, thereby reducing potential risks.
Taking care of your French Bulldog's teeth is an essential aspect of their overall health and well-being. By following these expert tips, including daily tooth brushing, you can establish a positive routine and prevent dental issues in your furry friend. Daily brushing provides numerous health benefits, including the prevention of dental diseases, maintenance of overall health, reduced veterinary expenses, and potentially prolonging your Frenchie's life. Remember, consistent and regular brushing, along with professional dental care, are key to maintaining optimal dental health for your French Bulldog.

Season’s Greetings! It’s December—the final month of the year. A time for reflection, get-togethers, and staying cozy. As most of the month falls during the lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas, you have about 3 solid weeks to wrap up your year before Christmas holidays start and all bets are off.
If you are taking stock of 2022 and realize that you haven’t done as much for animals as you would like to have done, fear not, because Frenchie Bulldog has one final 2022 charity partner in our Frenchie Gives Back program.
Hailing from and servicing Wisconsin, the Humane Animal Welfare Service (HAWS) of Waukesha Country is a staunch advocate for animals in need. Established in 1965 and community-based since its inception, HAWS is dedicated to “strengthening the relationship between animals and humans through adoptions and education—making a more compassionate community possible.” Adoptions and fostering are naturally a large part of what HAWS does, and there are comprehensive applications which do a great deal to ensure the best people-animal pairings. However, the follow-up provided by HAWS is really special and is what sets them apart. Each adopted dog gets four complimentary behavior sessions so even novice pet owners can get a leg up with the new addition to their family.
That’s right—HAWS has behavior/training classes for dogs, as well as humane education for human beings, horse care education, the ‘SNIP’ spay/neuter clinic, and most importantly the HAWS Shallock Center for Animals, which features a private dog park which can be booked for both training and recreational purposes. And while dogs are perhaps the most popular adoptions, HAWS also has cats, small mammals, birds, reptiles, turtles, and others to adopt.
The scope of HAWS is what is truly remarkable because it pulls together a number of different services and educational programs in order to furnish the community with peace of mind with regard to animal welfare. HAWS has two intersecting commitments which ensure the community’s animals stay supported. The first commitment is Open Admission, which is the idea that no pet is left out in the proverbial or literal cold. However, HAWS’ resources— voluntary surrender forms, for example—go a long way to ensure that animals aren’t simply abandoned on the doorstep.
The second commitment is Zero Kill, and that speaks for itself.
Due to their high standards of care for each animal, there is always a need for more help, whether volunteering or donations. While we recommend both, if you are outside the Waukesha County limits you can help your Wisconsite ‘Wisconsonian’ friends through a charitable donation which will be put toward medical expenses and pre-adoption care. Check out the HAWS website (hawspets.org) and have a look where your good intentions might be maximally beneficial. And, if you want to keep up with what’s up with HAWS on social media, check out @haws_waukesha on Instagram.
Until next time, all the best to your pet(s).

]]>Today, we’re going to discuss ways to keep your pooch and yourself warm and comfortable as the seasons change and we approach the coldest times of the year. Let’s start this discussion from the human perspective and see how the rules we follow for staying warm outdoors also work for our dogs.
C = Clean: Clean clothing layers will provide the most warmth in cold weather, as fibers lose their ability to insulate when they get matted with dirt and oil. Similarly, your pup’s innate protection from the cold—their coat—will not be a very good insulator if dirty and matted. Best to keep your pooch and yourself clean.
O = Overheating (Avoid): We’ve all overheated when bundled up for the cold and we know how it feels when sweat-soaked layers no longer provide the warmth they used to. Your pup has a slightly different issue here as dogs don’t sweat. Rather, an over-heated dog will pant and lose moisture off of their tongue which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is usually associated with hot weather but it’s a very real threat in cold weather too because when we are cold we are less likely to have big hydrating gulps of water.
L = Layers: Layers allow fine adjustment of insulation and better regulation of internal temperature. A jacket over a sweater over a shirt over a thermal undershirt is better than a parka over an undershirt in most cases, because the latter only allows extreme warmth or insufficient warmth. With regard to your pooch, think of their fur as layer one; if they have a thick winter coat, then think of it in terms of layer 1 and 2. Then consider how many layers you are wearing and make sure they’re getting as much protection as you are. And, if either of you overheat on your walk, just remove a layer!
D = Dry: This one’s obvious, but needs to be reiterated: Water at 32° feels a lot colder than air at 32° because it is more dense. Keep your pooch and yourself dry, and you should stay warm enough on most winter walks even if a little underdressed.
These basic principles of staying warm outdoors understood, let’s finish up with some little life-hacks for keeping your pooch comfortable around the house.
If your pup sleeps in your bedroom then it’s easy to make sure they’re comfortable. If they sleep elsewhere, like a laundry room, it’s easier to overlook proper insulation. You’re going to want to insulate windows and perhaps add a space heater to the room to make it more den-like.
Layers again! This is especially important during winter power outages. Getting swaddled up in blankets and being warm in an otherwise cold house can still be a pleasant experience—for you and your dog!
Okay, so this probably doesn’t need to be suggested as its the intuitive first step for pet owners when they or their pup are cold. Nonetheless, hugging and cuddling have known physiological benefits, and if they can also keep your warm then it’s even better.
Mammals require calories to keep their core temperature up, so if it gets really cold, its a great excuse to do some extra snacking and to be a little more liberal with dog treats and between-meal snacks.
Hopefully you’ve found help here whether you plan on hiking or hibernating over the holidays. Happy thanksgiving to you and your extended family and pack.

]]>Halloween is just around the corner and we have been working overtime to make sure your canine pal is looking fresh and festive for the upcoming holidays. Here are some of the haute-doge-couture items that are ready for your dog to floss throughout the neighborhood whilst ‘trick-or-treating’.
Okay…so that may not be an actual Robin quote, but you may find yourself saying something along those lines with Frenchie’s Super Pig collection. Paying homage to silver age Batman and the campy 1960s television series, Frenchie’s Super Pig line of accessories not only make the perfect Halloween attire for your pooch but are also suitable crime-fighting accessories for the rest of the year. Each night-black piece is emblazoned with either hot pink or bright yellow Frenchie logos framed in ‘batwings’. In fact, our full range of Frenchie products—including Strap Harness, Duo-Reversible Harness, Comfort Collar, Cooling Bandana, Poo Bag Holder, and Comfort Leash—have all been given the brooding anti-hero treatment.
—Fun!
Of course, all vigilantes need top-shelf gear, and so a lot of ingenuity and effort are put into ensuring that all of our elevated pet essentials are comfortable enough to be used as everyday wearers. At the same time, each Frenchie piece is strong enough to stand up to even the most energetic dogs. And, since fighting crime is a dirty job, all Frenchie Bulldog items are machine washable with colors that will stay as vibrant as your pooch. —Excelsior!
Or perhaps your pup would rather celebrate Halloween without the tragic origin story that all vigilantes require. Frenchie Bulldog has their back! Our Witches’ Brew collection is our most spooktacular offering this season. Available in either a black or purple palette swap, this collection positively screams! (sic.)—Cauldrons, skulls, jack-o-lanterns and peaked witch hats adorn these playful pieces which will make your pooch the belle of the ghoul gala!
This time of year is also a time where temperatures drop and we await winter. The upside is that we get to rock all kinds of fly winter gear like pullovers and jackets. Frenchie has your pooch’s autumn outfit on lock with our cute-as-can-be Frenchie Dog Hoodies. Our Panda Bear Dog Hoodie is a classic black & white number that channels heavy Snoopy vibes while protecting your pup from the chill in the air. On the other hand, our Unicorn Dog Hoodie is a tie-dye, candy-floss dream suitable for your ‘quite uncommon canine compadre’. Both hoodies are machine washable and so comfy that your pooch may not want to take it off.
So, whether you and your dog celebrate the equinox, Halloween, Thanksgiving, all of the above or none, Frenchie Bulldog wishes you both the best!

]]>Throughout the United States there are hundreds of organizations dedicated to animal welfare, rescue, and care. Short Noses and Friends United Rescue—or ‘SNAFU’—is one such organization. Frenchie Bulldog is excited to partner with SNAFU for the month of October as part of our Frenchie Gives Back program in order to generate greater awareness of their efforts as well as assist in their fund-raising and nationwide adoption services.
SNAFU’s mandate is composed of two twin-aims: To begin with, they work to remove dogs from the commercial breeding system as well as from breeding auctions, and; Second, they work to raise money to cover the medical bills of these animals. Their novel approach of maintaining relationships with breeders allows them to pre-emptively rescue pups before their future prospects turn dire. It’s a very pet-forward approach that Is geared toward harm reduction and maximizing animal welfare.
Of course, once the dogs are rescued the real work is only just beginning. Even pups that don’t require medical care still require fostering and—eventually—adoption. For this, SNAFU taps its community of volunteers (and you can become one become one at snafurescue.org/available-dogs.html), which is constantly growing as more people become aware of their work. And, similar to how they maintain relationships with breeders, they also maintain relationships with other shelters in the communities they serve in case their own facilities become full.
This collaborative approach has made SNAFU a recognized name in animal welfare throughout the Midwest. And although they do serve Indiana and Nebraska primarily, don’t let that fool you into thinking they are only a regional affair with a regional reach. In actuality, they serve the entire United States, meaning that anyone can adopt a SNAFU pup as long as they are willing to come and pick them up.
To facilitate adoption, SNAFU volunteers have put a lot of work into getting fostered pets ready for their forever homes. Their website is replete with doggo profiles which include pictures and detailed write-ups about temperament, needs, and personality traits. This takes a lot of guess-work out of adoption—particularly in cases where the prospective adopters live far away—which means less upheaval for the pups themselves as the adopters will have been vetted and have had their expectations managed by the time they decide to commit.
We at Frenchie are excited to help our Midwestern friends—furry or otherwise—in this month’s partnership. If you are also interested in helping their mission you can start with their website, snafurescue.org, or their Facebook group, SNAFU Rescue Facebook Auctions, which is updated more frequently. On Instagram, you can follow @snafurescue or you can make a direct donation to their PayPal using the email address, snafurescue@gmail.com. Finally, as a token of our appreciation for you, our valued Frenchie people and pups, for the month of October you can use the discount code, SNAFURESCUE10 in order to receive a 10% discount on all Frenchie Bulldog purchases.
Until next time, all the best to you and your furry companions.

]]>There are few things as “exhilarating” to dog owners as taking their canine pal to a dog park when they have reservations about how he/she will behave. Rescues, shelter pups, and even surrendered animals who might have previously had a ‘quirky’ human, can all come with some baggage or anxiety that goes undetected until that stroll in the park strips away the peaceful exterior and their latent fears and survival anxieties come bubbling to the surface. If your pooch is big, strong, and densely built then the stakes are even higher because even good-natured playfulness can be overwhelming to other doggos who might think they’re suddenly in a fight for their life.
Still, there’s no getting around it: Humans and dogs alike live in social worlds and being unable to deal with others of one’s own species is for all intents and purposes, an impairment. Sadly, even one bad day at the park can create a lasting impression in an owner’s mind that their dog “is just not good with other dogs,” and then further opportunities to socialize may be avoided, compounding the problem. Thankfully, social anxiety in dogs can be effectively addressed, but it’s always better to confront it sooner than later. Here are some tips for heading to the park to meet new friends (we’ll discuss actually meeting said friends next time):
Nature is rough. If you’re reading this article however, you probably afford your doggo a much safer existence than they would otherwise have on the streets or in the wilderness. —Remember that! You and your pooch aren’t going to get it right all the time, but chances are you’re still doing a good to great job. So take heart and don’t get discouraged by occasional lapses.
Training collars or harnesses can drastically reduce how much your dog is willing to pull against you. A word of caution however: Watch credible training videos before using these types of collars or harnesses for the first time and practice with your pooch before taking them to the park.
Assuming you will be walking to the dog park, adopt a big ‘ol confident, swagger-y stride (might have to fake it ’til you make it) which should make your pooch relax—albeit confusedly. From a mechanical perspective, the lateral swinging of your arms during a big, open stride creates a gentle back and forth pull on wherever the lead is fastened. Within this oscillating range of motion, your dog can find an equilibrium to walk within, while your swinging arms will serve as gentle, rhythmic, and ongoing corrections.
“Sit” is the first command most dogs learn and getting them to sit is perhaps the most broadly useful way to transmute excess energy into focus. Whenever there is a chance your pup might fly off the handle, sit is always a good first response. Get comfortable issuing this command and reinforce it with treats if you need to. If you live on a quiet street with only mild traffic, practice getting your pup to sit every time a car approaches. Beyond giving them a new point of focus, sitting will put an extra action (standing up) between them and potential catastrophe (dog-astrophe?).
So, what are you waiting for? Go out and practice your Mick Jagger-strut with your dog now, and next time we’ll talk about actions to take at the park.

]]>Alongside Frenchie Bulldog’s primary goal of creating elevated pet essentials for people-animal families, we also make it a priority to financially assist a different animal welfare group each month by diverting a portion of the revenue from each item purchased from us. Throughout September 2022, Frenchie Bulldog will be partnering with French Bulldog Rescue Network (FBRN).
Founded in 2011 and 100% volunteer-run, FBRN works to Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Rehome French Bulldogs in need. These rescued Frenchies come from commercial kennels, import brokers, shelters, and private rescue groups; many are even turned in by individual ‘Good Samaritans’. When French Bulldogs are turned in or rescued, FBRN’s stalwart team of volunteers get to work immediately, fostering the dogs and commencing or continuing education and training while ‘forever homes’ are tirelessly sought out. One of FBRN’s advantages in this mission is that it is not a regional group, but instead operates in all 50 states as well as Canada. Such an expansive network all but guarantees that French Bulldogs in need will find their place before too long.
If you do check our FBRN’s website (www.frenchbulldogrescue.org)—and you absolutely should—one of the most beautiful features is the effort and care volunteers have put toward each pooch’s profile. Each French Bulldog up for adoption is described in detail, including objective stats (size, age, color, etc.), temperament observations, household recommendations, and detailed write-ups along with photos. The enjoyment volunteers take from fostering these doggos is obvious, and their comprehensive write-ups allow more informed decisions on the part of prospective adopters who may not be able to travel and meet the pooch beforehand.
Still, adoption is but one of the ways in which you can help Frenchies in need. Sponsoring an already-fostered animal is another option if you are not ready to adopt, as is a direct donation through PayPal (fbrn.paypal@fbrn.net) to offset the costs of medical procedures, as every pet adopted from FBRN comes spayed or neutered. Donations can even be made in the name of a pooch you lost which will immortalize said animal friend on the website’s Memorials page. And, if you are looking to volunteer for FBRN so that you can foster French Bulldogs in your area, there is an application for that as well.
There is a lot to like about FBRN’s mandate and the user-experience of their site takes a lot of the guesswork and uncertainty out of remote adoption. In that same spirit of building greater peace of mind, we at Frenchie Bulldog are offering 10% off of all purchases for the month of September if you use the discount code FBRN10. So, if you love French Bulldogs as much as we do, you owe it to yourself and one (or more) lucky Frenchie(s) to join the Frenchie Bulldog Rescue Network, help a doggo in need, and then check out Frenchie Bulldog’s site for a great deal that will help even more doggos.

]]>Sleek. Grey. Cuddly. Loyal. Protective. Gentle. These are just some of the words used to describe sharks—truly the doggos of the deep, and a mariner’s best friend. ….
Okay, so sharks aren’t exactly like dogs—not even a little in fact—but there’s no reason why you and your pooch can’t incorporate their style into your own swag. Celebrate the waning days of Summer with Frenchie Bulldog’s Sharky Collection. Your pooch will look as clean as the bite mark on a surfboard with these fresh prints featuring sharks, stars, and soon-to-be-bitten-boards. Our whole range of doggy products—Poo Bag Holder, Cooling Bandana, Comfort Collar, Leash, and Strap Harness—have been given this funky palette swap to help you stay ahead of the curl! And, if you decide to go with our very popular Duo-Reversible Harness, you get two groovy designs; the above mentioned surfboard x shark combo, and on the obverse, a beautifully understated, shark silhouette paisley. This ensures you’ll have a more formal option if your pooch has an important function to attend.
Or perhaps being covered in ocean spray while shooting the barrel of a cresting wave as you are pursued by a shark is not the kind of drip you are looking for. Well say no more, fam, as we are also offering two more popping styles for your late-summer doggo haute couture needs: Pink Drip Skull and Blue Drip Skull. These two matching palette swaps featuring dripping skulls in pink and light blue will make every day seem like Dia de los Muertos. Like the Sharky collection, our Drip Skull offerings are built to stand up to the daily rigors of pet care: Reinforced stitching and quality buckles ensure durability while neoprene cushioning ensures that the harnesses and collars are comfortable enough to be daily wearers. Beyond acquiring stylish and durable accessories for your canine, another benefit of outfitting your doggo in Frenchie Bulldog attire is that a portion of each purchase is donated to a different charity which alternates monthly. August’s awesome charity is Road Dogs & Rescue (www.roadogsandrescue.org) and it is not too late to help them out.
Ok, make sure your doggo is asleep cause we don’t want them getting jealous, but dig this: Frenchie Bulldog is now offering accessories for people. No, not leashes and collars; instead we are now offering hats and apparel, as well as fanny packs in myriad styles. Our Teddy Bear fanny pack for example is one of our most sought out people accessories, and with its plush fabrics it may become the preferred hiding place for any snacks you have. Or, if you’re really ‘bout it bout it’ when it comes to matching with your dog, we even have full Frenchie Bulldog monogrammed tracksuits, including a pink tie-dye version. We have style and comfort waiting for you on our site!
All the best to you and your pet for the rest of this summer season.

]]>Each month, Frenchie Bulldog partners up with different animal charities from around the country who are doing exemplary work in rescue, rehabilitation, sheltering and fostering. This month, we are partnering with Road Dogs & Rescue (roadogsandrescue.org), a Burbank, California-based charity focusing on Pit Bulls and American Bulldog breeds. The story of Road Dogs & Rescue is a beautiful and relatable one:
Prior to creating Road Dogs & Rescue, founder Nikki Carvey had spent over ten years volunteering in animal care and was a proud momma to a Pit Bull and an American Bulldog. When the latter—Vinny—passed, Nikki fostered an English Bulldog and adopted him shortly thereafter. It was this incident—the adoption of Huxley, the English Bulldog—which both realized and cemented Nikki’s life’s purpose: rescuing bulldogs.
Fast forward some years and Road Dogs and Rescue has become a voice and advocate for one of the most misunderstood breed types. Nikki acknowledges that bulldog breeds can be a handful: “Eye issues, skin issues, joint issues – you name it, bulldogs get it. They are the Lovable Lemons of the canine world!” This realism about the challenges of bulldog ownership is refreshing, as it acknowledges how otherwise good people / prospective owners can come up short simply because they are overwhelmed. In light of this constant reality—and looking to mitigate cases of abandonment and neglect—Road Dogs and Rescue works with owners who are looking to surrender pets so that transitions happen more smoothly and the chain of care is never compromised.
Of course, for every pooch that is surrendered, several more are adopted and fostered, but for Carvey and the entire Road Dogs and Rescue organization, the primary focus is procuring medical care for bulldogs that are particularly at risk: complicated health conditions, seniors, and special needs puppies. These breeds are already abandoned at a disproportionate rate, and when their health is further compromised they are among the first to be euthanized. That needn’t be the case however, and Road Dogs & Rescue are working hard—and successfully—to make sure that these animals get the treatment they need. Thanks to a robust network of sponsors and donors, lifesaving medical interventions are undertaken every day putting pooches in a better position to find new families.

]]>Having a dog for a pet is so common that it could be considered a rite of passage. Most Americans own one or more pets throughout their lives and dogs are among the most common. To anyone about to go through the exciting experience of canine cohabitation for the first time, here are some things you might consider:
Man’s best friend is a lot like a girl’s best friend—both are forever. Think of pet ownership as having a lifelong companion, because that’s how your dog is going to carry it on their end of the relationship. As a prospective human for some lucky pooch, it is important to begin thinking in terms of reciprocity with regard to affection, commitment, and devotion. If you are not ready for that, you might not be ready for a pooch yet.
What does your life with a pet look like? How much of an upset to your current existence do you think you can tolerate? For highly conscientious and orderly types with picture-perfect domestic tidiness, a dignified older pooch might be the right fit, as their lower need for stimulation would be more congruent with the china shop vibes. If you’re a teenager who skateboards while their dog runs beside them on a leash, you might want a dog that is a little less subdued. Either way, you’ll know the right one when the two of you make eye contact.
If you are living with other people who will be interacting with your new dog and who may potentially take a secondary role in caring for it, it is important that everyone be on the same page regarding what is allowable and what is not. Is the couch off-limits? Are animals fed human food? Are they fed from the table? These are just some of the questions you should consider, and once you decide your rules it is important that every care-giver work to give your pup consistent constraints so as not to confuse them and set them up for failure.
Did the dog get into the recycling? Your fault. Ate the food left out on the countertop? Your fault. You probably get the point: If you are going to have a dog live in a human world, then you have to help them out by limiting the ways in which they can get into trouble. Loose cordage, leather items, cleaning products, etc.—all must be seen with new eyes. These items are no longer simply that mess you will get around to cleaning, but potential hazards for your dog; hazards because the dog can either hurt themselves getting into things that they should not, or because they can create messes which upset you, leaving them feeling alienated and distressed.
Pet food and accessories are going to be regular and ongoing costs, so you have to be sure you can handle them. Of course, there are numerous different foods out there with varying prices, and since higher prices don’t always mean a better product, these regular expenditures aren’t necessarily going to break you. But pet ownership—like life—throws curveballs at us, and sometimes a pet needs an emergency trip to the vet. These potential surprise expenses can really hit us at inopportune times, so be mindful. Consider setting up a fund you chip into every month so that you’re ready when emergencies happen. Another strategy to off-set veterinary costs is to secure pet insurance. You cannot put a price on peace of mind!
If these ideas have not diminished your enthusiasm, then you are probably ready for a dog. After all, cavemen had pet dogs, so it’s not rocket surgery or anything. Since shelters are a great place to start and easily google-able, why not start today?

]]>It’s official!—Summertime is here! A time when Alaskans rejoice, and when Arizonans hide in their air-conditioned homes. But what of dogs?—what do they like to do in the summer? The reality for most dogs is that their existence is pretty closely tied to the realities of their owner’s lifestyle. Case in point, in many households the family doggo only gets to enjoy the summertime when either the kids are home from school or the adults are home from work. What this means is that proper pet care during the (sigh!) Dog Days of Summer requires proper self-care. Here are some ways you can be good to yourself and—by association—to your pet.
The need for time off work has perhaps been mitigated by the explosion of remote work in the last couple of years. Nonetheless, time in a Zoom meeting is NOT time off. Vacation time allows you to redirect all of your bandwidth to self-care which your dog will also benefit from: More time to exercise means more time to exercise with your dog; more time to binge Netflix means more time bonding on the couch with Rover…even if you both overdo it on the snacks. The bottom line is this: Take time for yourself and your dog will thank you.
There was once a hostel dog—a Schnauzer—named Chester, whom all the hostel’s volunteers and guests lavished with attention. Chester liked one volunteer more than the others though because said volunteer—an adventurer in his own right—recognized that Chester needed some adventure in his life too. Together they would stroll the barrios and navigate through crowded markets full of interesting smells and lots of footsteps which could at any moment come down painfully on a small dog. Yet both Chester and the volunteer kept vigilant and calm and came through the ordeals successfully. There are few things that will bond you and your dog more than shared adversity, so pick an appropriate challenge for the two of you and get after it!
With regard to Chester, the volunteer also realized that courage should be rewarded, and so he was generous with the treats, even feeding Chester off of his own plate. Now, this is obviously a no-no in traditional training regimens, but still the underlying principles of high-risk, high-reward and breaking bread together are still valid. If you and your pooch go out for an all-day hike and you decide to treat yourself afterward, then treat your dog as well. Its possible, even desirable, to maintain the owner-pet dynamic while still blurring the lines from time to time in the interest of deepening a bond.
This point obviously covers a lot of different ideas, from you and your dog getting matching haircuts, to staying hydrated with cold beverages, to going for a swim together. At this point, most people know not to leave their dogs in poorly ventilated areas while it's hot, but for some dogs—especially those with ‘summer haircuts’—sunburns can also be a danger, as they can for you. On a similar note, unless you’re one of those barefoot-walking types, you probably don’t understand just how hot pavement and asphalt can be in the summer, but your dog does. Since your dog is essentially naked, you must plan your summertime activities as if you were both in that, um…natural state, and then take the proper precautions.
We all intuitively know that dogs and their owners are reflections of each other, so include your dog as much as possible in the activities that make you happy and healthy, and you two will be just fine. Happy Solstice!

]]>Face it: As a dog owner, you will inevitably go through many pet accessories as they break down over time due to soiling and wear & tear. Your pup is growing after all, and exploring the environment all around them, and so they’re going to need accessories—leashes, harnesses, collars, etc.—that will go the distance with them as they venture out into the world.
Frenchie Bulldog is excited to offer you our flagship accessory for your pup; the Duo Reversible Harness. As the name implies, this custom harness can be worn two ways as both sides of the harness feature attractive and complementary designs which will keep your pet secure during walks while at the same time showcasing their individual personality. Pirate themes, animal themes, floral prints, teddy bears, sports equipment, and pizza are just a few of the available outer designs which can be flipped to the inside for a more low-key look or to hide stains and soiling before you get a chance to wash the harness.
Manufactured with a high-quality poly blend, the Duo Reversible Harness remains durable and secure over time so that you can have peace of mind when walking more spirited Frenchies who like to pull against their leads. At the same time, the custom harness’ quilted weave and internal padding ensure that your pet won’t get hurt when they pull against the harness or, just as importantly, when you have to pull them away from hazards. The built-in comfort goes beyond outings to the park however; the Duo Reversible Harness is an everyday wearer as well, meaning that your pet will be happy lounging around the house wearing it, with no impediment to its activities.
Dogs get dirty. We all know this. However, the Frenchie Bulldog Duo Reversible Harnesses needn’t stay dirty. The same materials which create a breathable, padded, and comfortable accessory for your dog are also 100% machine washable, so the vibrant colors on both sides of the harness will endure as long as the materials do. If a full washing isn’t necessary, but rather a quick spray of deodorizer, you can spry away with confidence knowing that the materials will absorb the deodorizer without compromising the long-term strength and integrity of the harness.
For most pet owners, nothing is too good or too expensive for their little canine member of the family. Frenchie Bulldog appreciates and respects this care and compassion, and we want to do our part by keeping our products affordable. All Frenchie Bulldog Due Reversible Harnesses are priced in such a way that you needn’t break the bank to make sure your pet’s look is on point.
Factor in the fact that we donate a portion of our profits to animal charities, and you quickly realize that the Duo Reversible Harness is not only the best custom harness for your dog, but a great choice for all dogs.

]]>Few modern countries have had as much impact on modern American dog ownership as Germany. Case in point, If we think of police dogs, most of us would default to a mental image of a German shepherd poised like a coiled spring, awaiting a command. Or perhaps you own a Rottweiler, Pinscher, Schnauzer, etc. You’ve probably also heard of Schutzhund, (German for “protection dog”) a sport for dogs which developed in Germany in the early 1900s and where all the commands are given in German. As Schutzhund requires canines to carry out complex maneuvers through obstacles based on their owner’s commands, the sharp consonant sounds of the German language (often single syllable) are ideal for communicating clearly and eliciting the desired results.
Realistically, most among us don’t need our canine friends to carry out complex maneuvers, but if you are interested in trying proven, phonetically simple commands for your pooch, here are some of the basic ones:
This one isn’t much different from its English counterpart. The extra ‘Z’ on the end makes it sound a little more severe and, well…German. Go on—dig deep and bark it out like an Indiana Jones villain.
Lay Down. This is one of the more broadly useful German alternatives because one syllable is preferable to two when training a dog. Incidentally, a ‘Platz’ in Germany is the same as a ‘Piazza’ in Italy or a ‘Plaza’ in English-speaking countries.
No. Anyone who’s listened to the band, Rammstein probably knows this one. Simple, effective and an easy enough substitution to make.
Here/Come. As the English counterpart is also single-syllable, this word’s efficacy relies on inflection and using it as a command rather than a request.
Fetch. Most pups don’t need to be told to fetch, but if you’ve already trained your little canine dude to stay put and wait for your command, you will probably benefit from learning this command.
Out/Drop it. Pairs well with Bring—Remember your German inflection!
Stay. What’s good about this command is that it sounds a lot different from Sit and Sitz, so there is less chance of confusing your pooch.
Try some of these commands and see how they work with your pooch; they may respond very well. Until then, tschüss!

]]>What if you could split a beam of white light into a kaleidoscopic spectrum of colored light while opening your chakras and finding a pot of gold at the end it all?….or something. In case it was not abundantly clear, one of Frenchie Bulldog’s featured releases for June is the RAINBOW Pop collection. When your pup is dipped in such colorful ‘drip’, they’ll be the eye-catchingest of dogs strolling to the park. Strap Harness, Duo-Reversible Harness, Comfort Collar—all of our Elevated Pet Essentials have been given the full multi-color treatment. All the vibrant colors of the visible spectrum are harmoniously set together and adorned with cute rainbow popsicles and rainbow ‘Frenchie’ logos. For reversible items like our Duo Reversible Harness, the obverse side features a neat and tidy rainbow plaid design (just in case your pooch needs to attend a job interview). As well, by being just in time for Pride Month, the Rainbow Pop Collection is a great way for your pup to share in the spirit with you. Dogs have always been man’s best friend; now your pup can become man’s best ally.
On the other hand, if your pooch apparel is already set for June and you are looking to July, you might consider Frenchie Bulldog’s ‘Party in the USA’ collection. Let your pooch declare their independence from uninspired accessory designs this 4th of July with patriotic motifs such as rocket pop, flags, and ‘Uncle Sam hats’. Help your pooch defend and celebrate their first amendment rights to ‘bork’, yip, snore, and laze in the warm sunspot on the living room floor. Your pup will look positively presidential this Independence Day with these uniquely American accessories.
Whether you’re interested in the Rainbow Pop Collection, the Party in the USA Collection, or any of our other fresh designs, all Frenchie Bulldog accessories are made with comfortable, breathable, and machine washable neoprene. And furthermore, all Frenchie Bulldog harnesses and collars balance the durability to restrain more spirited pooches with the comfort and ergonomics to be used as everyday wearers. This means your pet can look fly all the time while you get to have peace of mind that they are safe and secure. Still, for many dogs without a loving human to take care of them, life is less about what accessories to wear and more about survival. Frenchie Bulldog never forgets these less fortunate pups and so each month, a portion of every purchase you make from Frenchie Bulldog gets diverted to to our Frenchie Gives Back charity program, wherein we select animal charities and humane societies from around the country to assist with donations. June’s charity, the LA-based I Stand with My Pack, is one such outstanding group whose work to house shelter dogs you will be supporting with your purchase. So whether prideful or patriotic, pug or poodle, do what feels right, looks good, and helps all dogs in the long run.

]]>It’s hard to name a better inter-species team-up than human beings and dogs. In contrast to other pets, canines are highly trainable and willing to take our lead in many useful ways: Sled dogs and police K9 units can enthusiastically perform physical work alongside their humans, while service dogs drastically improve the quality of life of individuals. Yet the true beauty of the human-dog relationship is companionship, and since companionship doesn’t require size, strength, or resilience, it has opened up the door for all sizes and shapes of dogs to be bred—including toy dogs, such as our beloved French Bulldogs. Let’s take a look at some early forms of toy dog ownership to see how things evolved up to this point.
Keeping small, ‘pretty’ dogs for companionship and decoration goes back thousands of years to dynastic China. Pekingese (named for the Imperial Chinese) and Pugs were bred as lapdogs for ruling families and were popular in imperial courts. While Pekingese were prized for their lion-like appearance, the facial wrinkles of Pugs were seen as lucky. Over time, the popularity of this type of dog spread throughout Asia and eventually to Europe in the 16th century.
European nobility grew just as fond of Pugs as their earlier Chinese counterparts. One noteworthy Pug named Pompey even thwarted an attempt of the life of a Dutch prince by alerting the prince of attackers with his barking. Terriers were popular at the time too, albeit more for working as ‘ratters’ and less so for their winning personalities. Still, ratting deserves credit as the chief working domain which smaller dogs were better suited to and therefore consistently bred for. Sadly, many dogs at the time were also bred and used for bloodsports involving bears and bulls. Around the time the United Kingdom banned these pursuits, the Industrial Revolution displaced English lace workers to Normandy, France with their pets, introducing many new breeds to the continent. The most popular by far were the tiny Bulldogs some owned. Though not a recognized breed, a brisk trade was established, with UK breeders selling undersized Bulldog pups to France where they were prized. As these ‘Toy Bulldogs’ were bred over time in France, Terrier stock was introduced to make their ears stand up straighter and eventually the modern day French Bulldog was born.
Small breeds made their way across the Atlantic with European mariners alongside larger breeds. Pest control was still a priority and breeding intensified to suit this purpose. In fact, the American Kennel Club refers to the Rat Terrier as an ‘American original’. The descendants of these ‘ratters’—most notably the Jack Russell Terrier— remain popular pets today. The French Bulldog also stayed in vogue in the United States, and by 1906 it was the fifth most popular breed in the country, with notable owners including the Rockefeller and Morgan families. As of 2017, the ‘Frenchie’ is the fourth most popular dog breed in the United States. We’re proud to take the venerable French Bulldog as our namesake at Frenchie Bulldog, but whatever small breed you cohabitate with, we will always seek to make the most comfortable, secure and stylish accessories for them.

Okay, so maybe you weren’t even alive in the 1980s. Or maybe you were popular in high-school and so can not possibly relate to this scenario, but chances are you’ve played Pac-Man (or Ms.Pac-Man) at some point and know that elated feeling of clearing the board of all dots, dodging all the spooky weirdos, and even loading up on some fresh fruit in the process—just like real life! Well now you and your pup can take a nostalgia trip together with Frenchie Bulldog’s all-new Arcade Collection. We’ve given all of our pooch accoutrements a retro gaming makeover; the Comfort Collar, Comfort Leash, Cooling Bandana, Bag Holder, Strap Harness and of course, the Duo Reversible Harness—the latter even featuring a Tetris design on the obverse.
All Frenchie Bulldog Arcade Collection items are made with the highest-quality materials and stitched for durability and longevity, ensuring that they can stand up to enthusiastic play, machine washing, and ’spirited’ walks. We prioritize the ergonomics as well—everything from the overall fit to strap adjustability to eschewing the use of metal buckles—so that your pup’s daily activities are not impeded. As well, the comfort-maximizing neoprene cushioning utilized in all of our collars and harnesses allows them to be used as ‘everyday wearers’ which is particularly useful if you and your pooch are still in the training phase. Keep your canine friend feeling secure and comfortable while looking wizard all the while. And of course for those pooches (and humans) who aren’t retro gaming enthusiasts, Frenchie Bulldog has a regularly updating set of designs you can check out on our website in addition to our staple designs. Whatever interests you and your pup share, we are bound to have a design that will fit your tastes.
As curators of elevated pet essentials, we at Frenchie keep our products affordable so that no pooch is left behind in the style and safety departments. However, we also take a portion of each purchase and invest in registered animal charities nationwide through our Frenchie Gives Back program. So go ahead, do your dog a solid while at the same time helping other dogs all over the country. It’s a proposition that’s hard to beat…like most retro games.
]]>It’s true. A part of your dog will always be wild and want to run free, but the great companionship we—human beings—have formed with our canine friends over generations is predicated on the collar as both a symbol of companionship and a tool for reinforcing your pup’s better behaviors.
And, since your dog is accepting you as pack leader by wearing their collar, shouldn’t you get them the best collar you can—one that balances durability and sturdy construction with your dog’s comfort and well-being?
Enter Frenchie Bulldog’s Comfort Collars. There is simply no better way to honor your companion and their unconditional love for you than by giving them the most comfortable and well-made collar available. Your pooch will love their comfy dog collar and you will appreciate its quality construction and reinforced stitching which ensure strength and longevity. For those occasions when you might need to grab the collar to stay your pooch’s excitement, you can do so with total peace of mind knowing that the quilted fibres and interior padding will prevent discomfort and injury.
And of course, like all Frenchie Bulldog pooch apparel, each comfy dog collar comes emblazoned with fresh and fun designs. We have a large selection of playful themes and designs which will make your pup a fashion maven whether strolling down Main Street for the world to see or lounging on the couch hiding from the paparrazzi. Choose from numerous designs including hot-pink floral, tie-dye, pizza party, sports, teddy bears, and plaid (‘hot pink’ of course!). If your pooch is a bit edgy and rebellious, he or she might even do well with ‘jolly roger’ theme.
Beyond the aforementioned benefits—comfort, style, durability—every Frenchie Bulldog comfy dog collar purchase you make has a portion set aside for charities all over the country which help animals in need. This means that your Comfort Collar won’t just make your dog feel good but you as well. Or, if you and your pup are canine accessory aficionados, you will love that your Frenchie Bulldog Comfort Collar integrates seamlessly—in both function and aesthetic—with other items in the Frenchie Bulldog pooch apparel eco-system.
Finally, we are so confident in our Comfort Collar and the satisfaction that you and your pup will derive from it, that we are offering hassle-free returns if you’re not completely satisfied with it. The Frenchie Bulldog Comfort Collar truly is the most loving choice you can make for your pet.
They won’t regret it.

Have a routine
In between bath days you should have a routine that works for you and your pup. For instance, after every walk try to wipe down their paws to keep them from getting dirt in their nails. And since dogs can’t “wipe” after they use the bathroom, it’s best if you help them out. It may seem gross at first but it’s better than a dingleberry getting on your sofa! Speak with your vet to find out which treats to use -- 2-3 times a week they can get a dental chew to help with their dental hygiene and bad breath!
Brush That Hair
All dogs shed—yes, even short haired dogs. Be sure to brush your dog frequently, at least a few times a month. This not only helps with shedding, but regular brushing removes dead hair and distributes natural oils for a clean and healthy coat. It also gets rid of dead and dry skin, and helps you become familiar with your dog's body.
Bath Time
Have a routine on when you give your dog a bath. For some it’s every other month. For others it's every time they go to the dog park. Whatever your routine is, try to make it a relaxing and enjoyable time for your dog. If they’re enjoying it, they will make the experience easier for you -- not having to fight your pup every time the bath runs is a major relief! Bathing your dog will not only have them smelling good but will also help improve healthy skin and a healthy coat. Be sure to do your research on what kind of shampoos and conditioners to use for your dog -- when in doubt, ask your vet!
Grooming
Dogs also need to be well groomed, but grooming is different for each breed. Please do your research on different breeds and their preferred grooming. For instance, you should NEVER shave a husky or a Shetland sheepdog as these dogs have what’s called a “double-coat”, which is a type of coat that consists of two layers. Double-coated dogs have a dense undercoat of short hairs and an under a top coat of longer hairs called guard hairs. This dense undercoat protects a dog from both hot and cold temperatures, and the top coat helps to repel moisture and dirt. Be sure when getting your dog groomed, or if you’re doing the grooming, to pay attention to what your dog needs including bath, brush, haircut, anal glands, nail trim, ear cleaning and more.
Dental Hygiene
Dental health is a very important part of your pet's overall health because dental problems can cause other health problems -- whoever knew that gingivitis could lead to kidney problems? Brushing your dog’s teeth will help combat the build-up of plaque, tartar, and calculus. Be sure to get your pet's teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian to check for early signs of a problem.
Trim Those Nails
Beyond comfort, neglecting your dog's nails and paws carries serious health risks. Dry paw pads can eventually crack and split, providing easier access for germs and parasites. Overgrown nails can cause your dog's feet to splay unnaturally, reducing traction and making walking painful. Consider investing in a nail grinder or regularly take your dog to the groomers (or vet) for a nail trim. Especially if your dog has black nails, it can be harder to see the quick and you don’t want to accidently cut them too short!
And once they feel—and look—their absolute best, be sure to put your pup in one of the Frenchie Teddy Bear hoodies for a comfy yet oh-so-adorable look!
