Pet Health Insurance

Imagine if you will: It’s a bright, sunny day and you’re taking your pooch out for a walk. Everything is going swimmingly. Toys are being fetched. Fire hydrants are being ‘watered’. Suddenly, as you are turning the corner onto your own street to return home, you see your dog eat something grayish-brown that might have been meat at some point. Later that day, your poor pooch is lethargic and sick. What do you do?

Or perhaps you’ve taken your canine companion out to the dog park to get properly socialized. Everything seems fine until another dog, overwhelmed by all the activity, gets too excited and lashes out, injuring your pooch.

Emergency medical costs are no joke, and it is truly heartbreaking when finances must determine the level of care you furnish your pet with. Fortunately, pet health insurance can really take the edge off of pet emergencies and we have done the homework for you!

Still not sure if Pet Insurance is a good idea? Do some more research! Some questions you might ask are:

1) Is the insurance I am buying good for all breeds?

Certain breeds—particularly those who consistently express genetic disorders—may be ineligible for emergency coverage. Know this up front if your pooch is a rare breed.

2) Which coverage does your clinic/veterinarian accept?

Finding a suitable insurance provider shouldn’t a problem, but in case it is, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance has no network restrictions. Your veterinarian will also be likely to have insight into the relative merits of various providers so make sure you have that conversation with them.

3) How old is your pooch?

Pre-existing conditions are not covered in pet health insurance plans and so the decision to invest in insurance early is an important one. Pet health insurance purchased when your pet is at an advanced age might turn out to be of no use to you if your elderly pooch struggles with health issues which expressed themselves before the insurance was sought out.

4) Which type of insurance is good for your dog?

Do you want complete coverage or coverage with a deductible? It will drop the amount of your monthly premiums to be sure, and that might make it worth it if your pet’s constitution is robust and if the amount of the deductible is a number you can afford to pay out of pocket. Also, insurance isn’t only for pet emergencies—PetSmart and Banfield have partnered to offer an Optimal Wellness Plan (OWP) which covers your pooch for routine checkups, shots and emergency visits (NOT emergency procedures) at all Banfield clinics.

To Insure or Not to Insure?

A wise man once said that if you could find a way to put peace-of-mind in a jar and sell it, you would be very wealthy. Pet Health Insurance is kind of like this proverbial jar of peace of mind. Never having to ask, “Is it worth it?” when considering treatment is a luxury you might consider treating yourself (and your pet) to.
